Here she blows!! Recording in San Francisco with One Week Records was such an authentic experience from the prior recording experiences we have had in the past. I’m not sure if we expected the experience to be like recording an album in the comfort of your own home, but it was entirely refreshing. Being able to record and produce songs with Joey in the Cape household was very surreal for both of us, but especially for Josh, a.k.a.’The Boy,’ who has been a long-time fan of the Fat Wreck Chords productions, lent an ear in his adolescence to Lagwagon, and then was completely inspired to write and record music himself after obsessing over the Cape/Sly split Ep acoustic release. Yea, he pretty much crapped his pants when Joey approached us to record.
We were infinitely grateful to discover how comfortable we felt as we arrived and met the sweetest 10 year old Cape daughter Violet, an aspiring gymnast, and Kristen, Joey’s wife, who welcomed us with hot coffee and smiles even though we are basically strangers who invaded their home for four days strait. We shared a lot of laughs. Even in the wee hours after long days of editing and re-doing. Many intelligent (and non-intelligent) conversations were had over irish whisky and full bellies of food from some of greatest hole-in-the-wall ethnic food restaurants you could ever imagine. To be able to sit and record with an artist that inspired us so much in the very beginning of our duo’s music writing was pretty unbelievable.
We, like some of the other artists who have recorded with One Week primarily now play regularly with a band. Recording as as a duo seemed daunting, and at the same time we realized once again that we can still play neat songs together with or without one. We had a chance to remember what that was like for us as a duo. Joey had a lot of confidence in us also, so that was a plus. Oh, and we loved having the family pooch Mochi around as a recording companion. She’s basically like the coolest dog ever. Anywho, we look fondly back onto this experience. We would jump out of our day-jobs in a heartbeat to do it again.
